On your Behind-The-Ear and Receiver-In-Canal Oticon hearing aids, you will have a hearing aid dome. This dome helps to situate your hearing aid speaker so that you can have sound properly transmitted. However, this dome isn’t meant to last the lifetime of your Oticon hearing aids.
Since the hearing aid dome is positioned at the opening—and a little inside—of your ear canal, it is prone to having earwax build-up, moisture degradation, and other issues. As hearing aid domes are soft and flexible plastic, they only last about a month of continuous use. So, once a month, you will need to swap out your hearing aid dome.
If you aren’t sure how to change out your Oticon hearing aid dome, you are in luck—Hearing Associates of Las Vegas are here to help you with all your hearing aid maintenance needs.
How To Change Your Oticon Hearing Aid Dome
Taking off an old hearing aid dome and putting on a new one is very simple and easy. All you need to do is follow these steps:
- Hold onto your hearing aid speaker (but not the dome) with your nondominant hand. With your free hand, carefully pull the hearing aid dome off the end of the speaker.
- Using a soft, microfiber cloth, clean off the speaker to ensure no moisture or wax will become trapped.
- Place the new hearing aid dome on the speaker.
- Once in place, be sure to press firmly on the hearing aid dome to ensure that it is completely locked into place.

Other Necessary Hearing Aid Maintenance Tasks
To keep your hearing aids in the best condition possible, it is important to provide regular maintenance. Along with changing out the hearing aid dome on a monthly basis, you should do these other tasks:
- Wipe down nightly – With a soft, microfiber cloth, you should wipe down your hearing aids every night before you put them away or set them on their charger. That way, you can keep earwax and moisture from building up.
- Pop battery doors open – After the cleaning, open the battery doors every night to allow air to circulate. The air can dry out the inside of the hearing aids and protect the battery compartment from corrosion.
- Full clean weeklyy – Once a week, your hearing aids will need a thorough cleaning where you go over the openings and clean out any trapped earwax and debris, check for damage, then wipe them clean.
- Replace wax guard – Like with the hearing aid dome, your hearing aids will have a wax guard or filter that will need to be changed out monthly. For some individuals who have lower earwax production, you may only need to change your wax guard every other month.
- Change batteries – Depending on the size of your hearing aids, you may need to change your hearing aid batteries every few days to every two weeks. Your hearing aids will alert when the batteries are getting low. It is best to change them before they have completely run out of charge. That way, your hearing aids aren’t as stressed. .
- Quarterly professional cleaning – Once a quarter, it is a good idea to bring your hearing aids in to be professionally cleaned by our hearing instrument specialists. With an in-depth cleaning on a regular basis, the lifespan of your hearing aids can be extended.
