TINNITUS RETRAINING THERAPY

Tinnitus is personal—and so is the way it affects daily life.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no external sound source is present. For some people it sounds like ringing; for others it may be buzzing, hissing, whistling, swooshing, or clicking.

Because tinnitus is subjective, one person cannot directly hear what another person is experiencing. There also is not a simple blood test or single objective measure that captures exactly how loud or disruptive tinnitus feels to an individual.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy focuses on helping people manage that experience. Rather than treating tinnitus as a single sound problem, TRT looks at both the sound and the response to it.
At Hearing Associates of Las Vegas, tinnitus care is individualized. TRT may be used alongside hearing technology, sound therapy, counseling and education, relaxation strategies, or other tools depending on the patient.
ASPECTS OF TINNITUS

TRT addresses both what you hear and how you react to it.

The source page describes tinnitus as an internally perceived sound that can range from mild to debilitating. Hearing Associates of Las Vegas presents multiple management approaches rather than a single universal solution.

01

The sound

Tinnitus may be ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, or another sound. Only you can hear subjective tinnitus. We start by learning what you hear, how often you hear it, and how much it affects your day.

02

The reaction

The distress often comes from the reaction to the sound, not only from the sound itself. Counseling and sound therapy are used together so the sound becomes easier to set aside.

ASPECTS OF TINNITUS

TRT addresses both what you hear and how you react to it.

Sound Therapy

Sound can be delivered through hearing aids, sound generators, or other devices. We choose the method after we understand your tinnitus and your hearing.

Counseling & Education

Counseling helps patients understand tinnitus, identify triggers, develop coping strategies, and reduce the amount of fear or attention attached to the sound.

Our hearing specialists provide tinnitus education and management support. We are not mental-health therapists. If anxiety, sleep, or mood need formal therapy, we can refer you to a trained psychologist.

TOOLS THAT MAY SUPPORT A TRT PLAN

TRT is a framework. The exact tools depend on the person.

The live page includes several approaches that may be incorporated into tinnitus management. Not every patient needs every tool.

01 · SOUND THERAPY

Customized external sound

Sound generators, headphones, hearing aids, or other sound-based tools can be used to reduce contrast with tinnitus and support habituation.

02 · CBT REFERRAL

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy when appropriate

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help some people with the anxiety and routines that make tinnitus harder to live with. When that support is appropriate, we refer to a trained psychologist. We do not provide CBT in the clinic.

03 · HEARING AIDS

Hearing technology

For people with hearing loss, hearing aids can increase access to environmental sound and may include tinnitus-management or sound-therapy features.

04 · LIFESTYLE

Physical and lifestyle considerations

Exercise, diet, sleep, medications, stress, and other physical factors can influence how noticeable tinnitus feels. Recommendations should be individualized.

05 · COUNSELING

Tinnitus counseling

Education, coping strategies, and understanding personal triggers are important parts of helping patients feel more in control of tinnitus.

06 · OTHER DEVICES

Additional tinnitus-management devices

Some patients use hearing aids, sound generators, or other tinnitus devices. We will tell you which current options are still appropriate and whether they fit your hearing.

Individualized care: Hearing Associates of Las Vegas does not treat tinnitus with a one-size-fits-all product. TRT, hearing technology, sound therapy, counseling, Widex Zen, Lenire, and other tools may be considered depending on the patient.

TINNITUS RELIEF STUDIO

A calmer environment for tinnitus care in Summerlin.

The Summerlin office includes a dedicated Tinnitus Relief Studio designed to create a more comfortable setting for tinnitus education, sound-therapy testing, counseling, and relaxation.

The studio uses softer lighting, a zero-gravity massage chair, therapeutic sound, and a more peaceful room design than a standard exam room.
It may be used while exploring sound therapy, receiving tinnitus counseling, working on hearing rehabilitation, or simply taking a short break in a calmer environment.
WHAT A TRT PLAN CAN LOOK LIKE

Progress comes from repetition, follow-up, and time.

The live page describes TRT as a long-term process rather than a quick procedure. The exact duration and combination of tools vary from person to person.

Understand your tinnitus

Discuss the sound, triggers, hearing, daily impact, and treatment goals.

Build the plan

Select appropriate sound strategies, counseling, hearing technology, and supporting tools.

Practice habituation

Use the plan consistently so tinnitus can become less attention-demanding over time.

Review & refine

Follow up, discuss progress, and adjust the plan as tinnitus, hearing, or life circumstances change.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS TRT?

Improvement varies, so success should be measured around the individual.

TRT is a longer program, often discussed over 12 to 24 months. It is not a one-visit procedure. Results vary, and we will not promise a specific percentage of mprovement. Your plan is adjusted as we see how you respond.

The page describes TRT programs lasting roughly 12 to 24 months and cites historical improvement figures of 75%–85% from multiple organizations and publications.
Those numbers should not be interpreted as a guaranteed outcome for an individual patient. A tinnitus evaluation and follow-up care are important for determining whether TRT is appropriate and how progress should be measured.

Important: tinnitus currently has no single universal cure. The goal of TRT is to reduce how intrusive tinnitus feels and help the brain treat the sound as less important over time.
