Real Ear Measurement

Real-Ear Measurement

Real-ear measurement verifies that the amplification from your hearing aids is actually reaching your ears at the levels you need. It helps our hearing specialists fine-tune your devices for your hearing loss and your unique ear anatomy.

5–15 minutes

A real-ear measurement usually takes only a short time during fitting.

Probe microphone

A tiny probe is placed close to the eardrum for accurate measurement.

Immediate adjustment

Programming can be fine-tuned if the measured output does not match your needs.

WHAT IS REAL-EAR MEASUREMENT?

Your hearing aid settings should be verified in your ear—not assumed from a manufacturer preset.

Real-ear measurement checks the amount of amplified sound reaching your ear while you are wearing your hearing aids.
It is performed after your hearing aids arrive and during your fitting appointment. The measurement helps confirm that the devices are providing amplification that matches your hearing needs before you leave the office.
VERIFY. LISTEN. ADJUST.

See how your hearing aids are performing inside your ear.

Once the hearing aids and probe microphone are in place, calibrated sounds are played while your hearing specialist watches the measurement on a computer.

Compare the output

The measured sound is compared with your hearing needs and current hearing-aid settings.

Find the mismatch

If frequencies, volume, or pitch are not where they should be, the difference becomes visible.

Fine-tune immediately

Your hearing specialist can adjust the devices while you are still in the office.

THE MEASUREMENT PROCESS

04

Four simple steps from fitting to verification.

Wear your hearing aids.

Your devices are placed in your ears as they would be during normal use.

Position the probe.

A minuscule probe microphone is placed close to the eardrum so the sound can be measured accurately.

Play calibrated sounds.

The system measures how well sound is reaching your ear across the frequencies being tested.

Adjust the programming.

If the output does not match your hearing needs, your hearing instrument specialist fine-tunes the hearing aids.

What you can expect

Thoughtful care before, during, and after fitting

The shape of the canal affects how sound travels toward the eardrum and can change the amount of useful amplification you receive.

Factor 01

Ear canal shape

The shape of the canal affects how sound travels toward the eardrum and can change the amount of useful amplification you receive.
Factor 02

Canal length

Different canal lengths can change how frequencies behave inside the ear and how the hearing aid sounds.
Factor 03

Shape of the ear

Your individual ear anatomy can make a manufacturer’s default settings feel slightly off until the hearing aids are verified and adjusted.
BENEFITS OF REAL-EAR MEASUREMENT

Small programming changes can make a meaningful difference.

Real-ear measurement gives your hearing specialist objective information for tailoring the hearing aids more precisely to you.

USEFULNESS

Maximize hearing-aid usefulness

Specific tailoring can help your hearing aids work more effectively than relying only on a general manufacturer setting.

LONGEVITY

Keep hearing aids useful as hearing changes

If your hearing changes over time, another measurement and reprogramming may improve performance before replacement is considered.

TINNITUS

Support tinnitus-management features

When hearing aids include sound-based tinnitus features, accurate programming helps ensure those sounds are delivered appropriately.

SPEECH

Improve access to speech

Fine adjustments can help make speech details more accessible when the initial hearing-aid settings are not precise enough.
